The Southern Police District is raising awareness and urging the public to remain vigilant following a recent incident involving an alleged robbery in Brgy. San Isidro, Makati City, on October 6, 2024, also serves as a critical reminder of potential risks associated with ride-hailing services “kambal-plaka”.

At approximately 1:10 AM, a 24-year-old female victim booked a ride using a ride hailing app from her residence in Baclaran, Parañaque City to Makati City. During the trip, the driver, identified as alias Roland, deviated from the expected route and suddenly stopped the vehicle. He then brandished a pair of scissors and declared robbery. Fortunately, the victim’s boyfriend was on the phone and overheard the alarming situation, prompting him to alert local authorities.

While the suspect initially evaded capture, SPD officers identified a vehicle matching the suspect’s description and apprehended alias Jethro, the legitimate driver of the vehicle with the license plate in question. Investigation revealed that alias Roland had copied the plate number for illegal use. With alias Jethro’s cooperation, police were able to convince alias Roland to surrender voluntarily, and the victim positively identified him as the perpetrator.

Although the victim chose not to pursue legal charges, she requested that the incident be documented in the police blotter to raise awareness among other commuters using ride-hailing apps. The incident emphasizes the modus operandi employed by individuals seeking to exploit unsuspecting passengers.

While the SPD is committed to enhancing public safety and is actively working to address these concerns, here are some essential safety tips for commuters to ensure their safety while using transportation services.

Report suspicious behavior. If you notice any suspicious behavior from a driver or feel unsafe during a ride, report it to the ride-hailing service and local authorities immediately.

Verify driver and vehicle details. Always check the driver’s name, photo, and vehicle details (make, model, color, and license plate) before getting in. Match the information provided by the app with what you see.

Share your ride information. Use the ride-hailing app’s feature to share your trip details with a friend or family member. Keep them updated about your location and expected arrival time.

Trust your instincts. If something feels off about the driver or the vehicle, don’t hesitate to cancel the ride. Look for alternate transportation if you feel uncomfortable.

Sit at the back seat. Whenever possible, sit in the back seat for more personal space and to allow an easier exit if needed.

Keep personal items secure. Keep bags and personal items close to you, and avoid displaying valuables such as phones, tablets, or jewelry.

Avoid distractions. Stay aware of your surroundings. Avoid using headphones or getting engrossed in your phone while waiting for your ride.

Plan your route. Familiarize yourself with the route you’ll be taking. If possible, use a map app to track your journey.

Exit in safe areas. Ask the driver to drop you off in a well-lit and populated area, especially if you’re traveling at night.

Use trusted services. Stick to reputable ride-hailing apps and services that prioritize safety and have a good track record.
